welcome to the rose city

It's been our home since August 2000. And in case you're just now tuning in to the The Hallway Insanity Hour, we're madly in love with the place. Go figure.

downtown

These are just a few pics from around downtown that we took one sunny August day. There's so much more to downtown, lots more pretty and cool and completely awesome things to snap pictures of, these just happened to be along our way that day. We hope to do better justice to the city with more photos soon.

from left to right

#1 -- tile map at Delta Park MAX stop; the map shows the old VanPort community development in the Peninsula (wedge of Portland that's between the Columbia and the Willamette) floodplain that was hailed as the community of the future -- the community was growing rapidly when it was completely wiped out by a major flood in the 40s and abandoned

#2 -- the Salmon Street Springs, one of many, many fountains in Portland; it's located at the south end of Waterfront Park and is usually full of people on hot days trying to get cool

#3 -- a view of downtown Portland and Waterfront Park from the Hawthorne Bridge

#4 -- a view of Riverplace Marina from the Hawthorne Bridge

#5 -- looking north from the Hawthorne Bridge, where you can see the Rose Garden and Convention Center (the twin buildings shine beams of light from their tips on September 11th to memorialize that tragedy)

#6 -- barge being pushed up the Willamette River (south) to Ross Island

#7 -- the Elk Fountain (big bronze elk statue in the middle of the street) that divides the street in the Plaza blocks

#8 -- the tree-lined streets of downtown Portland, Oregon

#9 -- one of the many Animals in Pools fountains in downtown; other fountains feature bronze sculptures of bears, ducks, otters, and other animals native to the Northwest

#10 -- the City of Portland Visitors' Center at Pioneer Square -- and yes, the entrance is flanked by walls of water

#11 -- Pioneer Square, aka Portland's Living Room since it's the main gathering place for most activities throughout the year; the city Christmas tree stands in the center during the holidays, sand is trucked in for the annual sand sculpture contest in July, free contests and theater events are held regularly, and almost every rally or march starts or ends here

#12 -- Portland's mounted police on regular patrol downtown

cathedral park & the st. johns bridge

The lovely park -- right on the Willamette River -- and magnificent bridge that are just two blocks from our house.

cathedral park jazz festival

The Cathedral Park Jazz Festival is an annual event in St. Johns that brings people from all over the country. For three days in mid-July, we get treated to fabulous music practically in our backyard. We usually fill a picnic basket, grab some blankets, and mosey on over to enjoy it during the Saturday festivities.

portland farmers' market

One of our favorite rituals is to get up early on a Saturday morning, head down to the Farmers' Market, browse and sample and snack our way along the lines of booths, fill our canvas bags with whatever catches our fancy, toss coins in the street musicians' instrument cases, head home when we've had our fill, and make dinner from our found treasures.

forest park

Forest Park is a 5,000 acre city park on the slopes of the West Hills. That makes it "the largest forested natural area within city limits in the United States". It also just so happens to be right across the river from our house and composes the entire backdrop of the view from our front porch. We love taking walks there.

laurelhurst park

This is a popular city park near Crema, where Sal works, taken just before Thanksgiving.
