goodbye, little one

We had to put our beloved cat, Freddie, to sleep earlier today after rushing him to the emergency room late last night. It's been an incredibly hard couple of days, but we're thankful that we could both be there and that it was both peaceful and painless.

Freddie was in our lives for almost 12 years. He crossed our path about a week before Sal and I moved in together, late in the summer of 1992, a scrawny little kitten my brother and his friend found abandoned behind the YMCA in Sheridan with an odd little bat-like face and a tail that was broken in two places. He moved with us from Sheridan to Casper to Laramie to Beaverton to Portland, grieved with us when Wolfie died, survived both diabetes and the world's most hyperactive cat (Hobbes), and gave us some of the best cat stories ever. He purred at the slightest touch, sometimes just when you looked at him and smiled, and his purr was so loud you could hear it across the room. We will miss him terribly.

If you never met Freddie, or would just like to remember him one last time, you can see more pictures of him here. Or read about the adventures that made Freddie famous. And if you're inclined, please make a donation to your local shelter or humane society, either on Freddie's behalf or that of your own dearly loved pets.

"I love cats because I enjoy my home; and little by little, they become its visible soul." - Jean Cocteau
